Coaches play an important role in the lives of student-athletes, often serving as mentors and role models. Given their regular interactions, coaches are uniquely positioned to support the mental health of their athletes. However, many lack the necessary training to address these sensitive issues effectively.

A 2022 national survey highlighted that while coaches feel confident in promoting sportsmanship and teaching skills, they are less assured in assisting athletes with mental health challenges. Notably, only 18% felt confident connecting athletes to mental health resources, and just 19% believed they could identify off-field stressors affecting their players. Recognizing this gap, there is a growing movement to equip coaches with the tools they need to support their athletes’ mental well-being. For instance, in 2023, Ohio became the first state to mandate mental health training for all high school coaches.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association collaborated with policymakers to integrate this training into existing professional development programs, ensuring coaches are not overwhelmed. Experts emphasize that even small actions can make a significant difference. Additionally, teaching athletes skills to regulate their emotions and transition into the sports environment can be beneficial. It’s also crucial for coaches to manage their own emotions, as their behavior can significantly impact their athletes’ mental health.

The integration of social-emotional learning (SEL) into sports is another avenue being explored. SEL curricula can help students manage stress and self-regulate, providing them with tools to handle the pressures of both academics and athletics. This approach not only benefits the athletes but also supports coaches in creating a more understanding and supportive team environment.

In conclusion, while coaches are in a prime position to support the mental health of student-athletes, there is a clear need for additional training and resources. By equipping coaches with the necessary skills and knowledge, they can better serve their athletes, fostering an environment where both physical and mental well-being are prioritized.
